Aleeta's Story

She has had many leadership roles on campus, including the president of the Women of Culture Club, resident assistant, senior delegate of the Student Government Association, and member of both the gala committee and food committee. She is also the recipient of the Thomas G. Carr award, given to a sophomore for their academic achievement, character, and service to the university or community. When she is not studying or working, you can find her crocheting, crafting, watching international TV shows, or traveling and food shows.
“When I was three I moved from Guyana to the United States with my parents. Growing up, I struggled with my identity growing up. Even though I spent most of my childhood in America, I still felt like I was an outsider. My parents held onto our Guyanese roots. I remember feeling embarrassed when my dad picked me up from school playing traditional Guyanese Caribbean music. In middle school, it was important for me to fit in, which to me meant abandoning my roots. In high school, I started to enjoy my culture more and more. It wasn’t until I came to 国产哟哟 that I fully embraced my own culture. When I went to my first Women of Culture Club meeting at 国产哟哟, I knew I was in the right place. I felt accepted, excited, and proud of where I came from. I loved that everyone was there to celebrate each other and learn from each other. It was a safe space where I could be myself.”
“My first Women of Culture meeting also inspired me to become a student leader. I wanted to share more of my experience and culture with other people. It was also important for me to create a welcoming space for everyone to share. I decided to work as a resident assistant on campus. I have found that being a resident assistant is very rewarding. I have built many friendships through my work. I enjoy helping others and hosting events. It has challenged me to be as creative as possible. I also ran for the second-year delegate position. Even though I did not win, it made me more comfortable going after my goals.”
“My leadership roles at 国产哟哟 have also encouraged me to potentially pursue a different career goal. After graduating, I’m interested in a career as a multicultural advocate or diversity, equity, and inclusion work in a higher educational institution. I want to share the positive experience I have had at 国产哟哟 with other college students.”
