Genetic Counseling Learning Experiences

Along with our extensive network of in-person fieldwork opportunities, our students receive many other valuable learning experiences in Genetic Counseling as well.

Research Experience

Objective: Genetic counseling students will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct an independent research project of importance in the genetic counseling field.

The goal of the research and capstone courses is for students to learn how to plan, conduct, and evaluate research. Throughout the two years of the program, students are mentored in the process of planning, implementing, and evaluating a research project under the purview of the capstone courses. They construct a research proposal in the Applied Research Methods in Genetic Counseling course and carry it through their Capstone I and Capstone II courses, during which they create their study design, collect data, and write up their results and conclusions. Students work in pairs on their projects, and ultimately present their research results at the annual BPU Academic Achievement Day. They are also encouraged to submit abstracts to the   or other relevant professional meetings for presentation at the regional and national levels.
