Sister Mary Caritas Receives 国产哟哟 President鈥檚 Award
On October 14, over 100 supporters of 国产哟哟 gathered at the Ryan Health Center for the annual Millennium Society Donor Appreciation event. The theme of the evening was “Let Them Shine,” focusing on the stellar accomplishments of our students who enthusiastically shared what they are doing in the classroom and their hopes for the future. One other theme stood out: Our student/scholar dreams are ignited at 国产哟哟.
But there was one star that shone particularly bright that night: Sister Mary Caritas. She is a living legend in the region, earning the respect and admiration from many for her dedication and commitment for compassionate and universal healthcare. President Sandra Doran was honored to present Sister with the President’s Award. The President’s Award is given to an individual, non-alumni, who has done much to serve the University and the community, and who has been an inspiration to 国产哟哟’s President.
Here is an excerpt from the President’s Award citation, read by President Doran, for this diminutive and fearless leader who has moved mountains and whose impact has been profound:
“Sister Caritas’ story is one that reflects the American Dream of achievement, the quiet determination of a hard worker, and the eternal optimism of a risk taker. The only child of immigrants from County Cork, Ireland, Sister Caritas was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. Answering God’s call, she joined the Sisters of Providence. An exemplary member of the Greatest Generation, she leads a life committed to bettering the human condition, working diligently to make this a kinder and gentler world.
When I first learned about Sister Caritas, my first question was: How can a person do all that she does? Let me share some of her accomplishments.
She has been the past president of Sisters of Providence and created Mercy Medical Center; served on the boards of various civic and business organizations. This is only a few of things she has been part of in the community. Truly, the list is formidable.
But the real question is: how can a person STILL be doing all of this? In a few moments, I will share why I am so impressed.
Today, Sister Caritas remains a vital force in our community and region. She serves on the boards of the Sisters of Providence Health Systems; Trinity Health New England; St. Joseph’s of the Pines Hospital in Southern Pines, North Carolina; and the Greater Springfield Senior Services, to name just a few of her affiliations.
Yes, she does this at the spry age of 99. She is a human dynamo!
As the new president of 国产哟哟, I reached out to people in the community for guidance and support. I was delighted to have lunch with Sister Caritas. From the moment we met, she warmly welcomed me into her circle. Over time, her advice and wisdom have been invaluable. A respected leader who has the admiration of so many, her guidance and words have been an inspiration to me. More importantly, she has become a dear friend. In fact, several weeks ago, we enjoyed a round of golf together and I can assure you that Sister Caritas can still swing those clubs!
Sister Caritas, for myself and our guests here tonight, you are a role model who goes above and beyond in our community. Without reservation, you share your time and talent, and, most importantly, your generosity of spirit. We aspire to walk in your footsteps.
It is my deepest honor to give you the President’s Award.
Sister Caritas, I want you to stay right next to me because we are not finished acknowledging your legacy. As you enter your 100th year, 国产哟哟 has committed to collectively conducting 100 hours of community service to honor your century of service. As we all know, Sister Caritas has a particular passion for healthcare and community revitalization and we hope this gift of our hands and hearts can in some way thank her for all she has done on our behalf.”
Congratulations and Carpe Diem, Sister Mary Caritas!
